The Question of Identity

If you are reading this on Sunday 22nd of March 2020, you are a Christian and in Nigeria, especially Lagos, you probably had service at home as a result of the restriction imposed on social gathering due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

One thing that has been going on in my mind is that If Jesus was present in the world at this time, what would He have done to Covid-19?

From His past performance, He would have probably said to the Pandemic “peace be still”.

Now, more troubling for me is the fact that Jesus is actually present in the world but this Jesus seems not as effective as the one that was here about 2,000 years ago.

The Christians of this age are the present day Jesus, that is you and I.

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. (‭1 John‬ ‭4‬:‭17‬ KJV)

But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. (‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭6‬:‭17‬ KJV).

These two scriptures point to our true identity as Christians, but in terms of performance, are we truly like Him?

This is what He said about us;

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. (‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭12‬ KJV)

If Jesus expects us to do at the minimum the quality of work that He did on earth, how do we compare to this standard when we consider our experience here on earth?

Many of us are oppressed at work, we’ve been on one position for a long time, perhaps getting some pay rise that don’t add anything to us. We have been silenced as much as our faith to the point that we act like we are not Christians.

The same church that should have been the place of healing for Covid-19 is now being restricted from meeting because it is just like any other social gathering. No power and no influence.

This is actually a time of reflection for me and I hope you will take time to reflect on this too.

Where did we miss the point?
Here is where I think we missed it;

And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. (‭Daniel‬ ‭11‬:‭32‬ KJV)

Do we know our God? Do we know who we are in Him?
Do we spend quality time to study and meditate on His word knowing that the type of faith required to excel comes by hearing the word of God?

As the news of Covid-19 is flying around, let it be a reminder to us that we need to go back to Him. Let our prayers be ‘that I may know him and the power of His resurrection…” like Paul prayed.

We need to come back to our place of authority and power that comes from knowing Him, knowing who we are in Him and the riches of His glory.

God bless you.
